Time to give up?

One point that you do not mention is the average number of years grad students (I am particularly interested in PHDs) apply before getting in. When is it time to give up? I still feel like that time is very far, but a ballpark will help when it will be time for disillusion.

Great question, but not one I can answer. I would ask a variety of people who know you and your work. That professor's intransigence may be a sign that she sees your cause as hopeless. While you should not accept one or two people's bad opinions on such matters, if a plurality of folks believe that you are best to do additional work before applying, I'd listen to 'em.
